HEARD: Olivier Rousteing

Ever since Olivier Rousteing was named creative director at Balmain I, (and many others), eagerly await the Balmain presentation each season to see how Rousteing’s vision will transform the label which has been in existence since 1945!!  So far so good…Now that the 26 year old is settled into his second season I was curious as to how he interprets his new role.  Here’s what he had to say:

”The challenge is keeping the rules from before and putting in who I am season after season, so that’s something that for me is important — to respect the past, because I love what Balmain was and what Balmain is, but actually what is important, too, is pushing more what I am.”

Olivier also invites us to join in the conversation on the official Balmain twitter and facebook pages…..If this designing thing doesn’t work out he definitely has a career in modelling, he is so gorgeous!!!

BALMAIN S/S13

When you’re bursting with creativity it’s easy to get a little heavy handed, which seemed to be the case for Olivier Rousteing when creating his Spring/Summer 2013 collection for Balmain (see hideous white, blue and gold basket weave dress).   But all in all it was about glamorous tailoring and lively, geometric patterns in Balmain’s signature black, white and gold tones.  Magnificent pantsuits were the highlight of the collection, giving stylish women an eveningwear alternative to the sexy black dress.

Favorite Things: The Coat 2011

My Favorite things coats edition features Balmain, Gryphon, Burberry, 3.1 Phillip Lim and “The Perfect” leapord coat.  Burberry topped the list with  3 entries I love the sherling and the full coat with African print. But the list would not be complete without a Burberry trench (of course) and this season they had many fabulous options including designs with ankara African wax print detail . Earlier this year Balmain, the rock-glamour Parisian house, named  25-year-old Olivier Rousteing  their new creative director.  Olivier Rousteing designed for Roberto Cavalli for 5 years before joining Balmain’s womenswear studio in 2009.  The question on everyone’s minds is will he be able to deliver this season? The jury’s still out… We’ll just have to wait and see, the collection will debut at Paris Fashion Week in October!! Ooh la la….
