“She’s still sexy without being trashy and that was my goal,” – Laquan Smith

Laquan Smith obviously reads this blog…(*waving* :-) )  The Fall/Winter 2013 collection titled BOND was a bit more mature than his previous collection boasting a bit less lycra and more syle and craftmanship.. Nice! This collection I can actually appreciate..

Smith’s signature use of PVC and Scuba material is explored yet again in several intricately tailored pieces. But there’s more to this collection than the slick, modern and, at times, overtly sexy pieces we’ve come to expect from Smith. This season the designs display a sense of growth and maturity — best seen in the luxe materials (leather, fur, pony hair and lace) used to elevate the collection. -Huffington Post

WILLIAM OKPO S/S13

The William Okpo Spring/Summer 2013 collection was fresh, it creatively “illustrates the unique aesthetic that results from the juxtaposition of the immigrant’s sense of style against American cultural sensibilities,”.  The denim and cotton jumpsuits played up the masculine element, which contrast perfectly with polka dot blouses and full layered skirts.  The braided cords woven into corset tops and pants added nice detail to the designs.  Relaxed, comfortable, effortless, it was dope.

The shoes were designed by Namibian brand Schier shoes, get a glimpse below.

ALICE + OLIVIA S/S13

Stepford wives and adolescent eyes will love Alice + Olivia’s spring/summer 2013 collection.  It was all about darling blue, coral and pink dresses inspired by the American 1950’s.   The designer kept it a bit interesting by mixing elegant embroideries, beaded lace, metallic knits and bold graphics.

TSEMAYE BINITIE S/S13

Sweatshirt and varsity jackets paired with trousers, Tsemaye Binitie was right on trend this season introducing sporty garments in a more relaxed fit to his latest collection.  The collection also included his signature sexy dresses complete with peplum and sheer numbers in neutral tones.

OZWALD BOATENG S/S13

We expected to see contemprary Savile Row tailoring during Ozwald Boateng’s Spring/Summer 2013 presentation, but we didn’t expect to see African wax prints included in his line of sharply tailored blazers; something this Ghanian designer had never done before.  The audience was in agreement that Boateng instantly elevated the cultural aesthetic of the fabric to a whole new level.  What more can I say?

FASHION WEEK PREP: Lisa Folawiyo

As the fashion world waits in anticipation of the fashion week shows that are taking place over the next several days, I could only imagine what the last few days and moments are like for the designers themselves.  Lisa Folawiyo, designer of the Nigerian fashion label Jewel By Lisa, allowed cameras to follow her as she prepared to show her Vintage Love collection at last years Arise Magazine presentation. The ad campaigns, press meetings, the mad run for shoes 2 days before the show, watch it all here.

TRACY REESE A/W12

Cool peplum jackets, draped silk blouses, and sparkly lamé party dresses in bright colors seen throughout the Tracy Reese autumn/winter 2012 collection gives one a sense of spring amongst the otherwise dreary color palettes commonplace on the runway for this season.

MIMI PLANGE FW2012 PRESENTATION

The collection is said to have been inspired by  surreal, enchanted Nordic forests, the designer brought absolute luxe to play; touching on Mongolian fur, Mo hair, velvet and hints of cashmere infusion. Owing to the  inspiration behind the collection, ruffled high-necks were observed, attention to structure a la boxy tailored numbers and even greater attention to texture & intricate beading.
